February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and rich history of Black individuals who have helped shape our world. At Faithful Guardian Training Center (FGTC), we take this opportunity to recognize the invaluable impact that our instructors, students, and professionals of color have on the field of emergency medical services (EMS) and beyond.

The Importance of Black History Month

Black History Month is not just about looking back—it’s about recognizing the present and shaping the future. The legacy of Black trailblazers in healthcare, emergency medicine, and public safety serves as an inspiration for future generations. From Dr. Charles Drew, who revolutionized blood plasma storage, to the many Black EMTs and paramedics serving their communities today, this month is a reminder of resilience, excellence, and progress.

At FGTC, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students and instructors, regardless of background, feel valued and supported. We celebrate the diversity of our staff and students because we know that different perspectives strengthen our ability to serve communities effectively.

Our mission is to provide high-quality training for all individuals pursuing a career in emergency medicine. By creating an educational space that promotes equity and opportunity, we empower all our students to thrive in the EMS profession.

We are proud to have a diverse team of experienced instructors and dedicated students who bring unique experiences and perspectives to our training programs. Their contributions not only enhance the learning environment but also help shape the future of EMS by ensuring compassionate and skilled professionals serve communities across Georgia and beyond.

✔️ Mentor and Inspire – If you're in the field, take time to mentor aspiring EMTs and paramedics from underrepresented communities.

           Moving Forward Together

At FGTC, we believe that representation matters. As we continue to train and equip the next generation of emergency responders, we remain dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all. This Black History Month, we reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, and the success of every student and instructor in our program.

Every February, we recognize American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health and the importance of preventing heart disease. As one of the leading causes of death worldwide, heart disease affects millions of people, but the good news is that many risk factors are preventable through lifestyle changes and education.

Why American Heart Month Matters

The American Heart Association (AHA) and other health organizations use this month to emphasize the significance of heart health and encourage people to take proactive steps toward reducing their risk of heart disease. Heart disease doesn’t just affect older adults—people of all ages, including young adults, can develop risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. That’s why it’s crucial to spread awareness and take action early.

Taking care of your heart doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small, consistent changes in your lifestyle can have a major impact. Here are some ways you can improve your heart health:

✔️ Eat Heart-Healthy Foods – Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. Reduce your intake of saturated fats, processed foods, and excessive salt.

✔️ Stay Active – Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, or even dancing can keep your heart strong.

✔️ Know Your Numbers – Regularly monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Early detection of any irregularities can help you take necessary precautions before they become serious health concerns.

✔️ Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol – Smoking is a major contributor to heart disease, and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues.

✔️ Manage Stress – Chronic stress can negatively impact your heart. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing to keep stress levels in check.

✔️ Get Regular Check-Ups – Visit your healthcare provider for regular check-ups and screenings. Early intervention can save lives.

How You Can Make a Difference

Beyond taking care of your own heart, you can help raise awareness and support others in the fight against heart disease:

❤️ Wear Red – The first Friday in February is National Wear Red Day to support heart health awareness. Show your support by wearing red and encouraging others to do the same.

❤️ Share Information – Use social media to spread facts about heart disease prevention. Tagging organizations like the American Heart Association (AHA) can help amplify the message.

❤️ Encourage Loved Ones – Talk to your friends and family about making heart-healthy choices. Encourage them to get regular check-ups and adopt healthier habits.

❤️ Learn CPR – Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, anytime. Learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can equip you with the skills to save a life in an emergency.

❤️ Participate in Fundraisers & Events – Many organizations hold walks, runs, and fundraisers to support heart disease research and education. Getting involved is a great way to contribute to the cause.

The staffing shortage in the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a growing concern that has the potential to impact the health and well-being of communities across the country.

EMS professionals, including paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), play a critical role in responding to medical emergencies and providing life-saving care to patients. However, many EMS agencies are struggling to recruit and retain enough qualified staff to meet the demand for their services.

One of the main reasons for the staffing shortage is a lack of funding. EMS is often underfunded, which can lead to low wages and insufficient resources. This can make it difficult for agencies to attract and retain talented professionals. Another factor contributing to the staffing shortage is the high levels of stress and burnout that EMS workers often experience. The nature of the work can be physically and emotionally demanding, and many EMS professionals struggle with mental health issues as a result.

The staffing shortage has serious consequences for the communities that rely on EMS services. When there are not enough staff members to meet the demand, response times may increase, and patients may not receive the timely care they need. To address the staffing shortage, EMS agencies need to prioritize investing in their employees. This includes offering competitive wages and benefits, providing support for mental health and well-being, and investing in ongoing training and professional development.

In addition, it is important for EMS agencies to work with local governments and community organizations to advocate for increased funding and support. By working together, we can ensure that EMS professionals have the resources they need to provide the best possible care to patients.

Overall, the staffing shortage in EMS is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. By supporting and investing in EMS professionals, we can help to address this critical shortage and ensure that communities have access to the vital services they need.

What is Faithful Guardian Training Center?

Faithful Guardian Training Center is more than just a school, it is a community. From our staff to our amazing students, we all have the same goal, to reach out to society and make a difference. We work hard at Faithful Guardian to train people to become EMTs, Paramedics, and Firefighters. When they leave our program, they leave with more than just a certificate. They leave with a sense of community, a sense of pride for what we do, and sense of family. While we are not as big as a university, we have staff and students who work hard day and night to succeed and make a difference.

I speak from experience on both sides. As a student, I receive all of the resources and help I could possibly ask for to become a successful health care professional. My instructor works morning, day, and night to make sure I have the tools and resources I need to be not only a good EMT but a great one. My administrators work morning, day, and night, to make sure that I am always on the right track. We are given the opportunity to receive practice as third ride students on the ambulance. We are given an infinite amount of resources to study and prepare for National Registry. We are provided with the tools used in the field to practice skills and learn to use them before we get on a truck. I am not only given an education, I am given a team to help me build a career.

Not only do I attend classes at FGTC, but I have the privilege to work closely with all of the amazing staff. Though my job is small compared to the hard work of our administrators and instructors, it is amazing to see how our offices work with people to reach their goals. Katrina, our Clinical Coordinator, answers phone calls and emails all day and all night to make sure each and every student gets to experience real time practice at an ambulance service, ensures our safety during our third rides, and makes sure that we enjoy ourselves while doing it. Jordan, our director of operations, answers every little question anyone could ask about our program. She is the know all-tell all of our office and I assure you, if you were to ask her a question about anything that involves our school, she could give you an answer right on the spot. She is the advocate for our students and ensures they are all content with the education and resources they are receiving. Jen, our Program Director, manages to find instructors and ensures that the classrooms are well equipped with people who have the knowledge to expand our minds and teach us how to be successful EMS Professionals, all while teaching a class of her own.

So join our team, our family, our community. Know that when you register for our classes you are not just given an education, you are given a family to stand behind you as you start a new and exciting chapter of your life. You are given a meaningful and fulfilling career where no one day in the office is the same and you have the opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life. We invite you to join, with open arms, in hopes that we can help you achieve your goals.

FGTC would like to shine some light one of our local hospital partners during this trying time to show just how much they go above and beyond for community and students, even outside of these critical circumstances. We appreciate the sleepless nights and endless dedication that these nurses and doctors are putting in to help everyone through the COVID-19 crisis at hand. Thank you!

This is a testimony of feedback that we received from one of our current paramedic students after attending an ER rotation at Tanner- Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, Georgia just a short while ago.

“I had the opportunity to attend a shift at the ER in Higgins recently and the staff was amazing. I jumped right in like I was at work when I arrived at 7 a.m. I knew most of the employees that were there that day due to previous interactions while working on the trucks at a local ambulance service. Because of this, I didn’t have a specific nurse to follow so I had plenty of opportunities to learn. The ER was busy and I was able to obtain multiple check offs and perform a bunch skills. All of the nurses were kind and eager to let me help and would even wait for me if I was helping another nurse with something at the time if they had something I might not see on the truck.

While attending this clinical, we had an arrest that came into the ER that we ended up working for 2 hours and 42 minutes before we were able to stabilize and transfer them to a Cath Lab. Specifically, I want to commend two nurses that I had the opportunity to work with, Kenny and Amy. During this time, and really the entire day, I was treated like a team member and they expected the same professional care and level of knowledge that they had. I was available when the arrest report came in and was waiting in the trauma room when the patient arrived. I fell right into the flow of things rather than feeling like I needed to be instructed on how to run a code. I appreciated that I was treated as a competent provider and they were willing to work right alongside me. They made sure that I had all of the equipment, supplies, and help available when I was performing a skill and they would ask if I needed to swap out if I was becoming tired while performing compressions. They let me administer medications and perform cardiac defibrillation when needed. They were willing to answer all my questions with informative answers and gave both textbook and real world experience point of views. The doctor spoke to me as a team member and would designate tasks as he would his ER staff. When the doctor would ask for recalls and suggestions, I actively and informatively engaged in team conversations and was not taken for granted just because I was a student. At the end of my shift, the doctor and nurses told me I did a great job and would love to have me back again.

I would just like to pass along my gratitude and give recognition to the two staff members that really had a positive impact on me. It was definitely a great experience that I will cherish for a lifetime.”

Immediate treatment may minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death. Thanks to recent advances, stroke treatments and survival rates have improved greatly over the last decade. A stroke occurs when a vessel in the brain is blocked by blood clots or ruptured vessels. A stroke caused by a clot is called an ischemic stroke, making up about 85 percent of all strokes in the US.

            Alternate Stroke Treatment Options

An endovascular procedure is a treatment to remove the clot by sending a catheter to the site of the blocked blood vessel in the brain. Patients must meet certain criteria to be eligible.

Sometimes these procedures involve tPA being administered directly into the blood clot (called intra-arterial treatment) to help dissolve the blockage. In other procedures, the doctor may attempt to remove the clot.

Over the last several years the American Heart Association has submitted several resources available to individuals regarding strokes.

         High Blood Pressure

What is considered high blood pressure? High Blood Pressure is when your blood pressure, force of blood flowing through your blood vessels, is constantly too high.

Two years ago, new guidelines from the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and nine other health organizations lowered the numbers for the diagnosis of hypertension (high blood pressure) to 130/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and higher for all adults. The previous guidelines set the threshold at 140/90 mm Hg for people younger than age 65 and 150/80 mm Hg for those ages 65 and older.

his means 70% to 79% of men ages 55 and older are now classified as having hypertension. That includes many men whose blood pressure had previously been considered healthy. According to the American Heart Association nearly half of the adults in America now have High Blood Pressure. If you didn't have high blood pressure before, there's a good chance you do now.

You may not feel that anything is wrong, but high blood pressure could be quietly causing damage and can threaten your health. The best prevention is knowing your numbers and making changes that matter in order to prevent and manage high blood pressure.

High blood pressure (HBP, or hypertension) is a symptomless “silent killer” that quietly damages blood vessels and leads to serious health problems. While there is no cure, using medications as prescribed and making lifestyle changes can enhance your quality of life and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and more.

           Make changes that matter:

           •	Eat a well-balanced diet that's low in salt

           •	Limit alcohol

           •	Enjoy regular physical activity

           •	Manage stress

           •	Maintain a healthy weight

           •	Quit smoking

           •	Take your medications properly

           •	Work together with your doctor

343… 343 is a number Americans are quite familiar with. 343 is the number of firefighters and paramedics that were killed in the line of duty on September 11th, 2001. That number is still climbing due to cancer and other disease they have developed post the 9/11 attacks.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed two laws Monday enhancing protections for first responders, including those who volunteered for 9/11 rescue, recovery, and clean-up efforts at World Trade Center sites.

A4882, also known as "The Bill Ricci World Trade Center Rescue, Recovery, and Cleanup Operations Act," is named after Lieutenant Bill Ricci, a professional firefighter in Clifton who volunteered to serve at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Ricci was ineligible for an accidental disability retirement under previously existing law, but through this act, members and retirees who volunteered after 9/11 will be eligible to receive accidental disability retirement. The act also creates an exception to the normal five-year filing requirement for 9/11-related operations.

"Thousands of courageous volunteers put their lives on the line in order to save those affected by the devastation of 9/11," Murphy said. "We will never forget their selfless acts of heroism, just as we will always be grateful for the first responders who put their lives on the line for us every day. Today we send a clear message to all of our heroes: We have your back. I am proud to sign legislation that will ensure the health benefits and compensation that these incredible men and women deserve."

S716, also known as "The Thomas P. Canzanella First Century First Responders Protection Act," is named after Deputy Chief Thomas Canzanella, a former Hackensack firefighter and advocate who served at Ground Zero after 9/11. Canzanella, who was an International Association of Fire Fighters state representative, passed away from a heart attack at the age of 50.

         The LUCAS Device

According to “jems” Just 5–15% of patients treated with standard CPR survive cardiac arrest, revealing a need for improved technique. To address this need, mechanical compression devices have become more prevalent and continue to evolve.

The LUCAS device has been shown to improve quality of chest compressions, increase ETCO2 levels as well as being able to sustain life-saving circulation during prolonged resuscitation attempts. LUCAS has been studied extensively, shown to be safe and effective and to save patients that would otherwise have been considered futile.

There are more than 24,000 LUCAS devices in use today; more than any competitive device. With more than 15 years of experience in automated resuscitation and over 200 studies published, you can rely on LUCAS’ to perform all the way from the site of the emergency to the hospital.

Minimum Interruptions- Humans tire and need to frequent rests to maintain good CPR compressions. Transfers from scene to ambulance to stretcher to bed all require interruptions in CPR. Having a fixed, consistent device providing constant compressions is ideal.

Reduction of Stress- Treating a victim that requires CPR is stressful enough. Any simplification to the entire ordeal is welcome. Using the LUCAS, responders can focus on other aspects of treatment and not have to constantly wonder who will be relieving them. Removing compressions from the list of things to worry about allows rescuers to deal with the condition causing distress.

Fewer Hands Required- If you are short staffed, treating a patient in distress can be even more challenging. Having your teammate, LUCAS, there doing “his” job allows you to focus on other aspects of the rescue.

Consistency Saves- The LUCAS automated CPR allows consistent rate and depth of compression, while reducing dangerous interruptions to compressions. Also, the quality of the compressions needed to sustain blood flow is not compromised due to the natural fatigue for emergency personnel. There have been several published accounts of multi-hour (wow!) rescues resulting in the successful resuscitation of patients.

         Program Director Highlight: Jennifer Wolcott

Faithful Guardian Training Center prides itself on having instructors, adjuncts, and admin staff that continue to work in the emergency medical field while providing state of the art educational experiences to their EMT, AEMT, Professional Firefighter, and Allied Health students. Even the Program Director, Jennifer Wolcott, holds state and national paramedic numbers and works on an ALS unit periodically to keep her certification and skills current.

Jennifer began her career in public safety in 2010 after obtaining her EMT certification while living in Florida. In 2011, after moving to Georgia, she decided to advance her education and enrolled in a paramedic program at Faithful Guardian Training Center. Soon after attending class, Mrs. Wolcott began working with the school, taking on numerous positions including Assistant Program Director, Clinical Coordinator, Lead Instructor, and Training and Development Coordinator before accepting the Program Director role in 2018. During her time at Faithful Guardian, she has maintained a part-time position with Puckett EMS and continues to serve the citizens of Cobb County until this day.

“We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to fill the role of EMS Program Director here at FGTC. She is patient, understanding, hardworking, and is loved by every staff member that we have. She is always thinking of new program ideas and never hesitates to lend a helping hand. One thing that we can definitely say about Mrs. Wolcott is that she believes in the mission of our school and always has the student’s best interest at heart. The fact that she continues to serve on the ambulance, while maintaining her responsibilities here at the school, says a lot about her character and passion for the field of EMS and that is exactly the type of person that should be in the Program Director position.” – FGTC Staff Member

While working an ambulance shift on September 16, 2018, Mrs. Wolcott and her AEMT partner, Jenifer Jackson, responded to a call that resulted in cardiac arrest. These young ladies were recently honored by the Cobb County Fire Department for their role in saving the life of a 45-year-old Cobb County man who collapsed from a heart attack while playing football. Both crew members were presented with a LifeSaver Award during the ceremony, along with other first responders that assisted in the save, and the patient, accompanied by his wife, was also able to attend and express their gratitude. The picture below was taken at the ceremony and Jennifer is seen holding her LifeSaver Award (on the right) and posing with her partner and the patient that they saved.

An EMS Program is only as good as the Program Director that oversees it… This is why Faithful Guardian Training Center sets itself apart from all others.

Faithful Guardian is pleased to announce that we have two new clinical sites for our students to complete EMS rides with, LifeLine Emergency Medical Services and Douglas County Fire Department. We are extremely excited about these partnerships and appreciate the opportunities that they are providing to our students.

With all of the stress and hard work they endure, it can be hard for students to think of their instructor as an actual person with a life of their own, so we wanted to bring some of the interesting aspects of our instructors to light, so for our first Instructor Highlight, we give you Katie Bardo!

Katie started out at FGTC as an adjunct instructor for our Paramedic classes, but it didn’t take long for the Lead Instructors she worked with to approach the administrative staff about her dynamic teaching style and great work ethic. So, naturally, we offered her a position as a Lead Instructor, and we are so glad we did! During a 20-year career in EMS, Katie has worked as a provider, a training officer, a supervisor – just about every aspect of EMS you can think of, and with all this experience and a motivation to train the best EMS providers, Katie has high expectations and pushes her students hard … the result is a great success rate, with the majority of her students passing the NREMT cognitive exam on the first attempt!

Outside of her career in EMS and as an EMS educator, Katie has a fascinating hobby - sailing! In fact, just the other week, Katie went on a multi-day sailing cruise from Norfolk, VA, to Washington DC, but make no mistake – she wasn’t lounging on the deck with a frosty drink in her hand. Katie and the rest of the crew had to trim sails, take turns at the helm, and deal with weather and tides. Luckily for all of us, Katie made it back safely and will be resuming her teaching duties at FGTC tanned and ready to go!

Infant and Child Hot Car Deaths and How to Prevent Them

Every year, especially during the summer months, we face a heartbreaking reality of child and infant deaths from being left in hot cars. Vehicular heatstroke. Hypothermia. The devastating effects of a child being left in a hot car. It's every parent's unfathomable nightmare, yet it happens several times a year. The tragedy can happen almost anywhere, and while hotter months are always the riskiest, the circumstances surrounding child vehicular heatstroke are varied.

According to the safety organization Kids and Cars, an average of 37 children die each year in hot cars. These include instances where a child has been forgotten in a car, accidentally locks themselves in a car or trunk, or, in a small number of cases, when a child has been intentionally left in a car. NoHeatStroke.org, a data site run by a member of the Department of Meteorology & Climate Science at San Jose State University, has been collecting data on these incidents since 1998. Since that time, the highest number of deaths per year was in 2010, with 49 deaths.

2015 had the lowest rate of incidents, with 24. 2017 was also an unusually deadly year, with 42 recorded deaths.

The hottest months inevitably bring the highest numbers of hypothermia incidents, so summer, late spring and early fall are the most treacherous times. As of July 20, 26 children have already lost their lives this year in hot car death incidents.

There are different ways that hot car deaths can be prevented. The “Bag in the Back” campaign urges parents to leave an essential personal item in the backseat so that before you lock your car, you’re forced to open the back door to retrieve your item. This helps minimize the risk of leaving your child in the car unintentionally. The “Bag in the Back” habit is a simple but smart way to avoid a preventable tragedy. But there are some other things parents can do to prevent something like this from happening to them, such as always opening your car’s back door no matter what. You can also keep a stuffed animal in the car seat when not in use, so when you baby is in the seat, their furry friend rides shotgun, reminding you that your kid’s in the back.

You should also always have a plan with your daycare or school provider so that if your little one doesn’t show up without notice, a staff member will call to check in. Any parent is capable of leaving their child in the backseat of their car, especially if they’re overwhelmed. Making one or more of these tips part of your routine, though, could save your baby’s life.

         Helping the shortage in Georgia...

According to a recent article published by JEMS (Journal of Emergency Medical Services) Georgia is facing a dangerous shortage of Paramedics and EMT’s. While I was conducting research on this issue, I realized that this is not only a problem in Georgia but many other states across the country including New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin to name a few. There are few and few less students pursuing a career in public safety.

Those already in Public Safety seeking to advance their education, for example from EMT to Paramedic, are coming across the issue of funding. Their departments are financially unable to fund their schooling. The students themselves are also having issues funding their continuing education because it can cost them thousands of dollars and take up to 18 months to complete. Not all public safety courses are shift friendly which can take a toll on the student’s household income which impedes on all their other financial obligations.

The Tempus Fidem Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds in order to offer tuition assistance as well as full scholarships for Public Safety Education. As of right now we are targeting areas in the West Georgia area however our goal is to be able to assist students across the state of Georgia and potentially nationwide.

Tempus Fidem is designed to not only create access and funding for existing public safety professionals who have excelled in their careers the opportunity to further their education or advance their skills but to also provide fast tracked education that is flexible and feasibly for working individuals, individuals with families, and individuals who are not college or military bound.

Another amazing aspect of Tempus Fidem is that we can break the poverty chain by providing career opportunities for those who struggle financially by targeting the students who not have the funds to attend a university or those who may not be military bound.

The Tempus Fidem Foundation can and will change lives. Not only will it change to lives of students and existing public safety professionals, but it will also change the public safety community. We can fill the shortage of EMT’s and Paramedics across the nation. The more EMT’s and Paramedics employed the faster the response times and the greater the level of care during critical times of ne ed. Th us, improving the lives of our community and our nation.

         Scope of Practice

The purpose of National EMS Scope of Practice Model is to identify the knowledge and psychomotor skills necessary for the minimum, entry level competence of each nationally recognized level of EMS provider. However, it is just that – a model. Individual states have the right to establish their own scopes of practice (descriptions of what a licensed individual legally can and cannot do), and local medical directors may also add or subtract certain skills based on the experience, training, and education of the provider. However, by staying as close to the national model as possible, the education and competencies of EMS personnel remains consistent and facilitates professional recognition and reciprocity.

To develop the scope of practice model, evidence-based guidelines and best practices are drawn from medical research. Over the past decade, the evidence for which interventions and treatments are effective in an EMS setting has expanded significantly. When suggestions are received to increase the EMS scope of practice at all levels, the therapeutic benefits and expected clinical outcomes were considered along with the level of risk to the patients and other factors.

When states decide to implement changes suggested by the National Scope of Practice Model, providers are not automatically allowed to perform those interventions. An individual must be educated to perform, certified as competent, licensed by the state to practice, AND credentialed by the Medical Director. If one of those facets is missing, the individual may not perform those procedures.

Some areas of focus from the 2007 model that were analyzed more closely for the 2019 model include:

           •	Use of opioid antagonists by all levels of EMS personnel

           •	Therapeutic hypothermia in cardiac arrest

           •	Pharmacological pain management following an acute traumatic event

           •	Hemorrhage control

           •	CPAP/BiPAP at the EMT level

In Georgia, the EMS Medical Directors Advisory Council (EMSDAC) discusses such issues and makes recommendations to the state regarding implementing changes to the state scope of practice. Keep your ears open for changes that may be coming to our scope of practice in the coming months and years.

Opioid Epidemic continues To haunt Americans

         Opioid Epidemic

The opioid epidemic in America, a topic almost all Americans have heard on the news, the radio, online, and sadly in their own neighborhoods. In 2016 the CDC conducted an in-depth study on the opioid addiction in America and the results were staggering. “In 2016, health care providers across the US wrote more than 214 million prescriptions for opioid pain medication—a rate of 66.5 prescriptions per 100 people. As many as 1 in 5 people receive prescription opioids long-term for noncancer pain in primary care settings. More than 11 million people abused prescription opioids in 2016.

Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids. More than 40% of all US opioid overdose deaths in 2016 involved a prescription opioid. Drug overdoses claimed the lives of nearly 64,000 Americans in 2016. Nearly two-thirds of these deaths (66%) involved a prescription or illicit opioid. The CDC estimates the total economic burden of prescription opioid misuse in the US is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of health care, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.” As of 2019 the opioid epidemic is still on the rise. The top job for 2019 is to destigmatize this disease. Unless residents embrace this cause, we will not be able to take the controversial steps needed to end the epidemic.

Substance use disorders are difficult to treat. We have a fragmented system that provides short bursts of assistance but fails to provide the long-term support needed for successful recovery as victims re-program their brains to end the cycle of addiction. Local governments must increase housing for individuals in recovery, ensuring a safe environment to escape the grip of opioids. Communities should welcome methadone clinics—a proven medical intervention that works. Cities and towns need to provide needle exchange programs and safe usage facilities, so that fragile addicts are not shattered by devastating disease and dangerous exposures. This will be possible only if we humanize this crisis and help our neighbors see victims as worthy people who need our support.

Measles Outbreak 2019: Notes For Healthcare Professionals

Currently, over 800 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 23 states as of May 10th, 2019. Out of these cases, 6 have been confirmed in Georgia, and the majority (80%) noted from New York.

History: Measles was once a deadly childhood disease in America until the vaccine was created and administered in 1963. The highly contagious childhood infection, which is caused by a virus, is considered extremely rare. In 2000, the measles virus was declared “eliminated” from the United States.

According to the Mayo Clinic, measles spreads when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or talks near other people. Infected droplets from the individual with measles can spray into the air or land on a surface and these droplets can remain active and contagious for hours. Those who are unvaccinated, travel internationally to developing countries or have a vitamin A deficiency are more likely to catch the disease.

Symptoms: Measles typically appear between 10 to 14 days after a person has been exposed to the virus. The symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, conjunctivitis, tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background inside the inner linking of the cheek, and a skin rash. In the first 10 to 14 days after an individual is infected, they will show no signs or symptoms of the disease, as the virus is incubating. Then, for two to three days, the person will begin to experience a mild to moderate fever, persistent cough, runny nose, sore throat and inflamed eyes. Infected individuals will then see a splotchy red rash spread, first on the face, then down the body. As the rash spreads, a person can also experience a spike in temperature, according to the Mayo Clinic.

To minimize the risk of measles transmission in healthcare settings, healthcare personnel should:

          1. Question patients with a febrile rash illness about if they have of traveled internationally, came in contact with foreign visitors, or had possible exposure to a measles patient in the last 3 weeks.

          2. Mask suspect measles patients immediately, if feasible, or loosely cover the heads of infants or young children with a blanket during transport.

          3. Healthcare personnel should be up to date with immunizations. Be sure to have had 2 doses of MMR vaccine or laboratory evidence of immunity (measles IgG positive).

          4. An N95 respirator mask should be worn by ALL Healthcare personnel, especially the providers that have not completed the immunization series or the titer (N95 respirator must be fit-checked each time it is donned).

          5. Notify any location where the patient is being transferred to for additional clinical evaluation or laboratory testing about the patient’s suspected status.

          6. Clean the patient area (truck) thoroughly after patient care is transferred.

          7. If measles is confirmed in the suspect case, exposed responders will need to be assessed for measles immunity.

Sometimes the Rescuer Needs Help…

In a fast and stressful career like public safety, it is inevitable that first responders will face potential mental health challenges. It is often assumed that the public safety provider is strong, detached, and unbreakable. This stereotype has led our industry into silence and denial regarding mental health issues, and most agencies are not equipped to handle this problem effectively. Numerous agencies and services have even punished or terminated public safety professionals for issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD struggles associated with our job.

It is time our industry takes a stand to change the misconceptions regarding mental health and step up to help our fellow first responders. Long term mental health and PTSD requires the same attention and respect that we give Critical Incident Stress situations. Thankfully, over the last few years, many first responders, as well as their organizations, have started the conversation and began to recognize the mental health needs of their members.

This journey of understanding mental health needs should to be shared between first responders and their agencies, as well as, working with mental health professionals, industry leaders, and our politicians. If a first responder gets physically injured, we immediately call for a rescue and seek definitive care. If the injury is serious, we provide long term medical, financial, and peer support. We need to apply the same standard of care to mental health issues as we do for physical injuries.

Until our industry catches up with the mental health needs of our first responders, our best resources are nonprofit and private industry groups that are being proactive. Sometimes it is hard to explain to a non-EMS person how we can be woken up in the middle of the night to drive somewhere we have never been to help someone we have never met. This is because the type of people who work in EMS are different. Most of us who work in EMS have always had a desire to serve and help others. This desire has only grown stronger as we have gotten older. The Tempus Fidem Foundation recognizes these people and works diligently to raise funds to offer tuition assistance for EMS education in the West Georgia area. Our first big fundraiser for the foundation is this fall, September 14, 2019. The Tempus Fidem Foundation is hosting its first annual Hero Run 9/11 Memorial 5k. Not only will we be out there to honor and support our fallen heroes but to also raise money to support our future heroes. The 5k will be held at Hobbs Farm Trailhead in Carrollton, Ga. Pre-race registration will be from 6:00 am until 7:30 am. At 7:30 am we will hold a Memorial Ceremony for our fallen heroes from the 9/11 tragedy that we will forever hold close to our hearts. Please come out to support our EMS community, past, present, and future. All proceeds go to The Tempus Fidem Foundation

EMS Agenda 2050

A People-Centered Vision For The Future of Emergency Medical Services

The EMS Agenda 2050 is the culmination of a collaborative and inclusive two-year effort to create a bold plan for the next several decades. Building on the foundation established by the landmark 1996 EMS Agenda for the Future, EMS Agenda 2050 lays out a vision for EMS systems that serve the needs of patients, families, clinicians and communities. To achieve that goal, EMS Agenda 2050 describes six guiding principles that need to be at the heart of efforts to implement the vision.

The goal of creating the EMS Agenda 2050 was not to predict what WILL be, but to create a vision for what COULD be. EMS is very different now than it was when the 1996 EMS Agenda for the Future was written, and it will be very different 20 years from now; EMS is no longer just an ambulance service. EMS professionals now serve in a broad range of roles from providing prehospital care, to practicing community paramedicine, to providing care in clinical settings, to serving as educators, to conducting research.

In a people-centered EMS system, people will receive comprehensive quality care in the place that is most convenient and comfortable, and the interventions they receive will be proven to produce the outcomes they desire. If transportation by EMS is required, then it will be done safely and efficiently – lights and sirens will no longer be utilized, instead using other advances that expedite transport and prevent collisions. Care will not only focus on life-saving or disease-treating care, they will also receive care that reduces physical, emotional, and psychological suffering.

In order to make the new agenda a reality, EMS professionals must create a new culture in EMS and take ownership of the future of their profession by emphasizing the importance of education, embracing their roles as healthcare providers in emergent and non-emergent situations, and implementing the principles of people-centered care.

Promoting Professionalism In The Field

“Professionalism: It's NOT the job you DO, It's HOW you DO the job.”

Empathy, appearance, compassion and respect are all words that come to mind when you think of the term “Professionalism.” All too often we allow the stressors of our career in Public Safety to affect our demeanor, or attitude, while serving. It is important to understand that EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement are held to a higher standard of Professionalism because of the public service that we provide.

Promoting professionalism in the field starts with you setting the bar for other providers to follow. Taking pride in your appearance shows that you respect the profession that you are in and that you respect your community enough to care. Treating patients, their families, other responders, and the general public with respect and dignity while keeping your composure through stressful situations seems like a lot to ask but that is what is expected of a professional. Being courteous and thoughtful while treating or handing over care of a belligerent patient isn’t a task, it’s a choice. Arriving to the scene of a multi-car accident with multiple patients could have a negative affect on your ability to think clearly and maintain your composure… but you are a professional.

Professionalism is what sets Public Safety Providers apart from other careers. You have to be ready and willing to show the patient complaining of a headache at 3:00 a.m. the same amount of compassion that you showed the family of the elderly man complaining of hip pain after a fall six hours earlier. The public deserves to have providers that care, that empathize, and respect them at all times, no matter the circumstance. You chose this field. You chose to be under the watchful eye of your community for 12 to 24 hours at a time. You chose to become the most professional professional there is…. Embrace it!

Think back and remember why you became an EMT, a Paramedic, a Firefighter, or an officer. You wanted to make a difference, right? Help your fellow responders by promoting acts of professionalism and lead by example. Help your community receive the care they deserve while creating a better, more respectful image of your department or service.

Great patient care is the result of a true professional at work!

These students have worked extremely hard during their programs to achieve the goal they set out to accomplish over a year ago. They put in a countless number of hours into study groups, online work, testing, homework, and clinicals to get to where they are today. Their courses are coming to a close and they are preparing for their national exams which they will soon take. Their journey at FGTC is coming to an end but soon they will embark on an even bigger journey as they practice out in the field doing what they love!
